Turn off the light at the switch and wait five minutes for bulbs to cool before touching them. For ceiling fans and fixtures near the breaker panel, turn off the circuit. Place a drop cloth on the floor to catch dust and debris.
Remove glass shades or globes and soak them in warm soapy water for five minutes. Wipe the bulbs with a dry microfiber cloth. Clean the fixture housing with a damp cloth and one drop of dish soap. Dry everything completely before reassembling.
Remove the cool bulb and set it aside. Wipe the inside and outside of the can housing with a dry microfiber cloth. If there is stuck grime, dampen the cloth lightly with water. Dry completely before replacing the bulb. Do not spray cleaners directly into the can housing.
A quick wipe handles routine dust. A deeper clean means removing the glass shade or globe, washing it in the sink, and cleaning the bulb socket area.
