How to Clean Range Hood Filter

Range hood filters trap grease so it does not coat your cabinets and walls. Tucson homes with gas ranges build up grease on filters faster because gas burners run hotter and produce more combustion byproducts.

How to Clean a Range Hood Filter — Step-by-Step Guide

You can clean most range hood filters one of two ways: soak and hand-wash, or run through the dishwasher. Check your filter type first. Baffle filters and mesh filters handle each method differently.

Soak in Hot Soapy Water

Fill the sink with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Add a quarter cup of baking soda for extra grease-cutting power. Soak the filter for fifteen to thirty minutes, then scrub with a soft brush and rinse.

Dishwasher Method for Metal Filters

Many stainless and aluminum mesh filters are dishwasher-safe. Place them upright on the bottom rack. Run a hot-water cycle. Skip the heated dry setting. Let the filter air-dry before reinstalling.

Dry Fully Before Reinstalling

A damp filter traps moisture inside the range hood. This leads to mold and a musty smell near the stove. Let the filter air-dry for at least one hour before putting it back.

Range Hood Filter Cleaning Steps

  • Remove the filter by sliding or unclipping it from the hood.
  • Check the filter material: stainless or aluminum mesh can go in the dishwasher.
  • For hand-washing, soak in hot water with dish soap and baking soda for at least fifteen minutes.
  • Scrub with a soft-bristle brush to remove grease from the mesh.
  • Rinse under hot running water until the water runs clear.
  • Air-dry fully before reinstalling the filter.

How Often to Clean Based on Cooking Frequency

If you cook daily or use a gas range, clean the filter once a month. A clogged filter stops trapping grease and sends smoke and odors into the kitchen. Light cooks who use the stove a few times a week can clean the filter every two to three months.

Alex's kitchen deep-clean includes range hood filter removal and cleaning. Our crew of three to four trained cleaners handles this as part of the kitchen package. It is one of the most-skipped tasks in home kitchens.

How to Clean Range Hood Filter FAQ

How do I know if my range hood filter needs cleaning?

Hold the filter up to the light. If the mesh is coated with a dark, sticky film or you cannot see light through it, it is time to clean it.

Can I use a degreaser spray on the filter?

Yes. Spray a kitchen degreaser on the filter and let it sit for five minutes. Then rinse under hot water. For heavy buildup, combine the degreaser spray with a soak in hot soapy water.

What if my filter is charcoal, not metal?

Charcoal filters cannot be washed. They must be replaced. Check the hood manual for the replacement schedule, usually every three to six months.
