Full Guide
A refrigerator left with food residue, dried sauce, or last month’s vegetable drawer spill can quickly turn into a point of friction with a landlord or new owner. Many rental agreements specify that appliances must be returned to the same condition as move-in, minus normal wear. A sticky shelf or a layer of grime on the door gasket can be flagged as a deficiency.
Tucson’s hot climate makes food odors develop faster inside an enclosed fridge. Even if you’ve already unplugged the appliance, trapped smells can become stronger within hours. Cleaning thoroughly now prevents musty scents from settling in while the refrigerator sits empty between tenants.
Beyond the deposit, a sparkling clean refrigerator just makes the whole move-out experience feel more complete. The new occupants will appreciate walking into a kitchen where the appliance looks - and smells - like new.
Gather your supplies before you empty so you won’t have to scramble. You’ll need:
- Dish soap or a gentle all-purpose cleaner
- Baking soda for odor and gentle scrubbing
- White vinegar or a vinegar-water solution for glass and shine
- Microfiber cloths or soft sponges (avoid abrasive scrubbers that scratch plastic)
- A small brush or old toothbrush for corners and seals
- Bucket or basin for washing removable parts
- Towels or a drop cloth to protect the floor as you work
If your refrigerator has a water dispenser or ice maker, check the manual for cleaning instructions specific to that model. In many cases, you’ll want to run a few cycles of plain water through the dispenser after wiping down the tray area.
Follow these steps in order to clean your fridge for inspection without missing common trouble spots.
Step 1: Remove all items. Take out every jar, bottle, and leftover container. Toss anything expired or nearly empty that you won’t be transporting. For non-perishables that you plan to bring with you, set them aside in a cooler or box.
Step 2: Take out shelves and drawers. Most glass shelves and crisper drawers lift right out. Lay them on a towel near your sink. Removing these pieces before wiping down the interior lets you reach corners where crumbs and liquid collect.
Step 3: Wash shelves and drawers separately. Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. If drawers have stubborn stains, sprinkle a little baking soda and gently rub with a damp sponge. Rinse everything well and let them air dry completely. Do not put cold glass shelves directly into hot water - the temperature shock can crack them.
Step 4: Wipe the interior top to bottom. Start at the top of the fridge cavity and work down. A mixture of baking soda and water (about one tablespoon per quart) cuts through residue without leaving chemical smells. Pay special attention to the drip tray under the freezer coils, the vents, and any crevices around light fixtures. Wipe the ceiling of the fridge, the back wall, and the door interior.
Step 5: Clean the seals and exterior. The rubber gasket around the door often harbors dried food bits and mildew. Use your small brush with a mild soap solution to gently scrub along the folds of the seal. Wipe it dry with a microfiber cloth. Then clean the door front, sides, and top with an all-purpose cleaner appropriate for the finish - stainless steel requires a different approach than white enamel.
Step 6: Finish with the floor beneath. Carefully pull the refrigerator away from the wall if possible. Sweep or vacuum the floor, then mop. Dust and debris that gather behind the appliance can trap odors and attract pests.
Use this checklist on move-out day to verify nothing gets overlooked:
- Interior completely empty of food and personal items
- Shelves and drawers removed, washed, and dried
- Interior walls, ceiling, and door panels wiped clean
- Drip tray and vents clear
- Door gasket free of debris and mildew
- Exterior doors, sides, and top wiped down
- Water dispenser and ice maker cleaned (if applicable)
- Floor behind and under the refrigerator swept and mopped
- Appliance unplugged and door left slightly open for air circulation (check your lease or real estate agent’s instructions - some prefer it closed)
Ticking through this list ensures your clean fridge before move out will pass any reasonable inspection.
