Tucson Appliance Cleaning Guide
Tucson's hard water leaves mineral scale inside your washing machine drum. Monthly descaling keeps the machine running and clothes smelling fresh.
A washing machine that smells sour or leaves white residue on dark clothes has buildup inside. In Tucson, dissolved minerals from hard water accelerate scale on the drum and heating element. Detergent tray mold and a dirty door gasket add to the problem. Cleaning all four parts once a month keeps the machine working the way it should.
Pour two cups of white vinegar into the detergent drawer or directly into the drum. Run a hot cycle and pause it halfway through. Let the vinegar soak for 30 to 60 minutes to break up mineral scale. Resume the cycle and let it finish.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray inside the gasket folds. Wait ten minutes. Use a soft cloth or old toothbrush to scrub the folds. Black mold collects in the creases and will not come out without direct scrubbing.
Pull the tray all the way out. Soak it in warm soapy water for five to ten minutes. Scrub with a small brush to remove detergent residue and mold. Rinse and dry before pushing it back in.
Tucson tap water carries mineral load that most domestic appliances were not designed to handle as frequently as needed here. The heating element inside the drum is the first part to build up visible white scale. Scale acts as insulation and makes the element work harder and heat less efficiently. A monthly vinegar cycle dissolves that scale before it thickens. Homes with softened water can get away with descaling every two to three months.
Front-load machines are more prone to gasket mold than top-loaders. The door seals tight and keeps moisture trapped. After every wash cycle, leave the door open for at least one hour. Bleach works for disinfecting the drum. Run a hot cycle with half a cup of bleach. Do not mix bleach and vinegar in the same cycle. Use one or the other. Vinegar is safer for repeated use and also descales mineral buildup.
Sour smells come from detergent residue and mold in the gasket or drum. Too much detergent leaves residue that mold feeds on. Use the correct amount of HE detergent and run a hot clean cycle monthly.
