How to Remove an Ink Stain from Fabric, Carpet, or Upholstery

Different types of ink need different treatments. Ballpoint pen ink is oil-based and responds to rubbing alcohol. Permanent marker is alcohol-based and also breaks down with alcohol or non-oily hairspray. Printer ink is pigment-based and may need a commercial solvent. The key rule: dab with a cloth, do not rub or scrub.

Ballpoint Ink on Carpet or Fabric

Dab rubbing alcohol onto a clean white cloth. Blot the stain without rubbing. As ink transfers to the cloth, move to a clean spot. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Permanent Marker on Fabric

Apply rubbing alcohol or non-oily hairspray to the stain. Let it sit for one minute. Blot with a clean cloth. Repeat until the color stops transferring.

Printer Ink on Fabric

Use a commercial dry-cleaning solvent or isopropyl alcohol at 90 percent or higher. Blot the stain carefully. Rinse with cold water and repeat as needed.

  • Ballpoint pen ink on fabric and upholstery.
  • Permanent marker on fabric.
  • Printer ink on carpet or cloth.
  • Ink on delicate and synthetic fabrics.

What Fabrics to Avoid Alcohol On

Rubbing alcohol is safe on most synthetic and cotton fabrics. Do not use it on acetate, rayon, wool, or silk. These fabrics can dissolve or discolor with alcohol. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first before treating the stain.

Apply alcohol to a cloth first. Never pour it directly onto the carpet. This prevents over-saturation and protects the backing. Work from the outer edge of the stain inward to avoid spreading.

How to Remove Ink Stain Fabric Carpet FAQ

Does hairspray really work on ink stains?

Non-oily hairspray can work on ballpoint and permanent marker. The alcohol in the spray helps break the ink down. Oily hairspray leaves its own residue, so check the label first.

What if the ink stain is already dry?

Dried ink is harder to remove but not impossible. Alcohol still helps soften dried ballpoint ink. You may need more passes and more time with each application.
