How to Remove a Red Wine Stain from Carpet, Upholstery, or Fabric

The key rule: blot, never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibers. Cold water and dish soap work on most fresh stains. Tucson homes with light-colored Saltillo tile need fast action because the grout absorbs red wine and stains can set in minutes.

Fresh Stain on Carpet

Blot up as much wine as you can first. Mix one cup of cold water with one teaspoon of dish soap. Dab with a clean cloth. Blot dry and repeat until the stain lifts.

Dried Stain on Carpet

Re-wet the stain with a small amount of cold water first. Let it soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Then apply your dish soap mix and blot. Dried stains take more passes.

Fabric and Upholstery

Blot the stain with cold water first. Apply table salt to a still-wet stain and let it sit 3 to 5 minutes. The salt draws up the pigment. Vacuum the salt and follow with dish soap.

Stain Types This Guide Covers

  • Fresh red wine spills on carpet.
  • Dried red wine stains on carpet.
  • Red wine on fabric and upholstery.
  • Red wine on light-colored grout and Saltillo tile.
  • Hard surface red wine spills.

What Works and What to Avoid

Always use cold water for red wine stains. Hot water sets the pigment into the fibers and makes the stain much harder to remove. Test any cleaning mix on a hidden spot first to check for color change.

Club soda can help on fresh stains. The carbonation lifts pigment out of the fibers. Use it as a first step on carpet before your dish soap mix. For Saltillo tile and grout, rinse fast with cold water because porous grout absorbs wine quickly.

How to Remove Red Wine Stain FAQ

Does salt really work on red wine stains?

Yes, on fresh wet stains. Salt draws moisture and pigment up and out of the fibers. Pour salt on right away, let it sit a few minutes, then vacuum it up.

What if the stain is already dry?

Re-wet it with cold water first. Let it soak in for 2 to 3 minutes. Then treat it with dish soap and cold water the same way you would a fresh stain.
